Default referencing cells with carriage returns

I am trying to write a simple cell reference (=a62), in which a62
contains some carriage returns in it. CRs were originally entered as
alt-return, and asc(CR)=10. In my new cell, I get the string of text
showing the boxes to indicate the CR, but there is no CR realized at
the proper place.

Any thoughts on how to make my new cell look like the referenced one,
with CRs in the proper places?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
david
