legacy: EMM = RAM, bug?

I am currently finishing up a computer I just put together. I have edited
config.NT in Windows XP several times before, with other computers. Only
this time when I add EMM = RAM to config.NT I get the following error
message when I start the DOS prompt:

"Unrecognized command in CONFIG.SYS
Error in CONFIG.SYS line 56"

I have never had this happen before. If you want to get the more advanced
DOS games working in the NTVDM, the EMM = RAM line is imperative.

I figure this is probably some bug introduced by Microsoft's updates. I
have had a similar situation before, when I complained on these boards that
a Toshiba SD-M1502 DVD ROM wasn't working with either cmd.exe or command.com
I discovered after the next critical update to Windows that it was working
in the command prompts.

Hi Mister,

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...loads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

A DOS boot disk is useless on an NTFS file system. I am well aware of
DOSbox, and it is THE choice for playing the most primitive DOS titles. But
last I checked it doesn't implement some advanced features, like POV hat
(joystick feature) or Soundblaster 16. To do these things there is a
wonderful utility called SoundFX 2000, but it rides piggy back to the NTVDM
and therefore needs it to operate optimally. DOSbox also has the advantage
of being able to run protected mode DOS titles.

I found a problem; it still qualifies as a bug. I had added the line
"ECHOCONFIG," which I had not done before. This is a legal line and Windoze
did not complain about its existence. But it made EMM unusable, and it
didn't actually cause any configuration information to be displayed either.

Hi Mister,

The solution would be to format a partition for your legacy pre-NTFS
DOS games in FAT32 format and then use the Multiboot disk. :-)

This bug is already present on Win 2k - It's the ECHOCONFIG line,
supposed to do something possibly useful.
As it happens the only thing it does is to
*disable* the *EMM* configuration.
If you unREMmed ECHOCONFIG, put the REM back - works fine now.
