Default AVI format to WMA no longer works

I had windows movie maker on my old comp with XP pro sp1, I have a Minolta
Dimage camera that makes AVI files. In the past I had no problems importing
AVI files to windows movie maker and saving as WMA. All the movies I made on
my old comp play back perfectly, so it something about SP2 or WMM, not the
media player.
I now have a new Dell with XP pro sp2, when I import AVI and try to save as
WMA it ruins all the colors, it looks like a bad cartoon. Anyone got a
suggestion for me??

I can pay $50 to change the firmware in my camera to take Quicktime format
instead of AVI but I use the video very rarely (it is a still camera, and no
sound files are recorded) If I do this will I be able to use the QT format in
WMM?
