Is it possible to convert wmv's to avi files??

Yes. If you're asking specifically about conversion
to DV-AVI, you can do that with Movie Maker.

If you're asking about some other AVI format,
you would need to use some other software to
perform the conversion.

Thanks Bob, it was right in front of me. I can only save analog video
using MM2 which saves it as wmv. I guess I can just save the raw file as
a avi then, seems simple. I want to try a render it using Pinnacole 8 to
see if the quality is any differant.

Pinnacle 8 needs type II DV-AVI files and Movie Maker 2 saves it as type
I.... if you need a conversion utility, check the Setup > Other Software
page of my site.
