Direct link to DVD recorder via firewire?

I was wondering if it is possible to record an edited DV-AVI movie directly
to a DVD recorder? The DVD recorder does have a firewire input. I would
think this could save a lot of time bypassing the step of converting the AVI
to MPEG2 on the computer and then burning the DVD. This way you can go
straight from AVI to burning the DVD on the recorder.

The answer is yes if you have the right kind of DVD writer. I have one that can
do this but I have never used it so cannot say how good it is. In order to keep
up with the data rate I imagine the computer must first convert to a highly
compressed format like MPeg. Raw digital video arrives too quick for normal
capturing (I think)

With regard to the MPeg converter, to be fast enough to do a live burn to disk
you may find that they have cut some corners (unless its a hardware encoder
that is) the result of cutting corners might reduce the final quality too much.

In any case. Movie Maker does not know about DVD burners...and I doubt that
even though MM knows about CD burners that it would be able to do such a burn
(thinking of how XP handles the drag and drop method and burn later) I am not
at the right machine just now so can not test it out. but I do know that it is
done in Industry and by the Military....so finding the right software/hardware
mix is the thing to do if you really want to do it that way.

You can store a DV AVI movie file on a DVD but only 20 - 21 minutes of video
would reside on one dvd disk and the disk wont be playable in a DVD player.

To do this make 20 minutes long movie clips in Movie Maker and use the DVD
burning software to burn a "data" DVD disk.

I liked your idea and we've the same thinking to simplify this burning process. Do you already have this DVD recorder with Firewire
input? I've an ad about this DVD recorder. If you have you can test it with a DVD-RW first then if all goes well and use DVD+R for
final burring. Please post your finding because many people are watching this thread. You can easily find your thread again; Go to
this MovieMaker Group > press F3 key and type-in mark (not necessarily in Capital letter) > press Enter key.

If your DVD recorder wouldn't accept DV-AVI --- then you should choose MPEG1 for editing your movie and to be return back to your
camera using Mini-DV tape because for 2 reasons: 1) Your tape hold bigger movie file and 2) DVD recorder can only convert from MPEG1
to MPEG2 good for DVD.

Additional suggestion: If all goes well you can Copy DVD+RW to DVD+R --- it is more faster this way.
