I have seen many reports here and WindowsMoviemakers.Net forums about this
issue: Installing SP2 causes DV AVI's to not work.

If your problem is the same then you may be able to resolve the issue by
re-registering the concerned DLL. On the Start->Run dialog copy paste the
following line and press OK.

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdv.dll

It would indeed be quite remarkable if Windows Media Player could use an
unregistered codec when Movie Maker could not (as per the OP description), but,
I guess it would be worth a try.
