Hello,
Thanks for the reply and clarification as to what you want, I see I was not far off the mark .There is an issue with Movie Maker with regard to multiple ROMS on one system.....There is a link to that in the FAQ section on my site. What I recomend you do is .... 1) With the computer turned off unplug the ribon cable to both of the ROM drives. 2) Power the machine up and go to the device manager. If you find reference to them then uninstall them. 3) Reboot the system twice 4) Power down and connect the drive (NOT the DVD RAM drive) Additional...make sure that this drive does not share a cable with a hard drive, and try and make sure that it is device zero on the cable. 5) Power up and work through the New Device wizard. Obviously this should have fixed the one drive. If it does not you will have to make sure that it is on the Microsoft list of compatable drives...should have said that first. If it is on the list, check with the manufacturer for a firmware upgrade AND a driver upgrade. If upgrades are available, apply them and if they do not have an immediate effect go through the steps above again. Assuming that you now have a drive that is recognised, try Movie Maker. If that too works then proceed to install the second ROM drive. The above is how I got my two ROM drives to work. In my case the Combination drive stopped the ordinary CD drive from working Hope that helps a little (Lot) If not do please say so and we will have another go. -- Best Wishes.....John Kelly www.the-kellys.org www.the-kellys.co.uk \|||/ (o o) ----------ooO-(_)-Ooo------------- All material gained from other sources is duly acknowledged. Hello,
Wow a laptop with two burners onboard??? that's some laptop. I bet it gets real hot if both drives are used at the same time. Anyway, back to the issue.... I remember what that article was about by the way, basically Movie Maker will only access the first CD burner that it comes to and will not give access to a second ROM drive. I am guessing that your laptop was sold with two drives (What make model is the laptop) If it did come with two ROM drives they are going to be an integral part of the "system" which means there may be nothing you can do about it, other than check for firmware and software updates for them and possibly the motherboard as well. Assuming that no updates are available/you are using the latest updates and as inconvenient as it may be, I would now consider going back to a state prior to SP2. From the complaints I have heard in here and elsewhere it seems that a "System Restore" to a state prior to SP2 is full of problems as well and may not be possible, so that would leave a re-install of XP and everything up to but excluding SP2. As a re-install is not so hard nowadays I would be tempted to go all the way and install SP2 as well (Just in case it works) Other things to consider: As your problem is not really anything to do with Movie Maker, it might be worth taking the problem to the manufacturer if you have not already done so, and at the same time check out the windowsxp.hardware and windowsxp.setup-rollout groups you will get a better quality of help there. -- Best Wishes.....John Kelly www.the-kellys.org www.the-kellys.co.uk \|||/ (o o) ----------ooO-(_)-Ooo------------- All material gained from other sources is duly acknowledged. Hello,
To be honest I think you should go with the suggestion that you re-install. This is the short version of what I have been told. SP2 was basically created so as to correct previous bugs in the system AND to force every one to go down one route with regard to software and hardware properties. It seems that there were several "known" problems that were a benefit to some software houses and hardware designers. They exploited these weakness's so as to cut down on programming time and to save on the cost of getting certain kinds of expert help. The result was the release of hardware and software that did not properly conform to the Microsoft view. Microsoft have strengthened their software and the result is that many software packages and some hardware will no longer work. It was because of the above that I suggested you try to find Firmware updates and software driver updates for your system. Because of SP2 what might be happening is....Hardware and software currently in use has a very short life nowadays.....I bought a new DV Camera just weeks after it came to this country only to find 6 - 7 months later that it was discontinued !!!! From the manufacturers point of view, they will not want to spend money on resources that will soon, or are already, discontinued. The cost of carrying the Microsoft Certification is to some too much in time and money The only way forward would be if the device has a main Version update (e.g. going from 5.nn to 6.00) and, the update can be applied to the older firmware. Most motherboards have the ability to accept firmware upgrades. I have done this to one of my motherboards twice, and I have also done it to a CD burner ( I can't remember what the manufacturer was...it was in the far east somewhere) When in your situation there is an English phrase, "Bite the bullet" which in your case would mean save all of your data files to CD and proceed with a full format and install XP from scratch....and that's where another English phrase comes in..."Catch 22" You cant backup your data because the CD drives do not work.Actually, if you have a second computer save all of the data to that over a network or ask a friend if you can plug your laptop into his and save the data that way. Unless some one else has a bright idea I think you options are reduced to just the one....reformat and start again..... -- Best Wishes.....John Kelly www.the-kellys.org www.the-kellys.co.uk \|||/ (o o) ----------ooO-(_)-Ooo------------- All material gained from other sources is duly acknowledged.
