Newbi Can't Connect device

I'm completely new to this. I want to transfer holiday videos taken on a Sony Handycam to my hard disk via Movie Maker. My problem is I plug my handicam playback through the Computer's 'line in' but the two devices are not communicating.

Where do I even start?

If it's a digital camcorder, you start with a firewire connection.... if an
analog one, start by looking into analog capture devices.
