MM2 crashes when I click on video transition or effect -

Okay, I have been having some real (and recent) problems with Movie Maker 2. Until about 3 weeks ago
(end of March 2004) it worked just fine - and I was pleased with the features it has - a super program. Well,
the problem began. Now, everyone knows that during this period 'sasser' arrived, and so did a bunch of
other nasties and my Windows Update went mad updating (as did Norton and AVG). During this period
Movie Maker 2 ceased to work properly. Everytime, and I mean EVERYTIME I click on either a video
transition or effect, the program crashed. I reformatted my system twice to eliminate system problems,even
loaded it first to eliminate software conflicts. There were none - MM2 continued (and still continues) to crash
when I click on the two features mentioned above. In desperation I called Microsoft's technical support and
spoke at great length with a technician about this. In fairness, under her guidance, several things were tried,
investigated, attempted - all for not. The program still crashes. I received a nice email from the tech and
replied please do not close the ticket - keep trying for a solution to my (and others) problem. I did check the
newsgroups on Microsoft's site and found others having this same problem. The ticket was closed and I
heard nothing back - the program is useless in it's current form. I again emailed Microsoft, to a person
whose email I know - and even though she is not a techie she does understand - and on May 24/04 I
received an email telling me that the techies have been alerted - again - and to expect contact from them. I
was also given the option to phone the tech line - unfortunately I have used up my two freebie calls with this
problem -so- I await - with a program that worked fine until March/April - and am faced with the probability of
having to purchase a similar program - unless the techies find the problem and let me (and the many others)
know

Hi there,

Your problem may be caused by a codec that Movie Maker does not like. This
a very common issue.

Your one-stop-don't-need-to-look-anywhere-else Solution is with a program
called "Rename Codecs".

Instead of reading miles of dross that is full of maybe's and perhaps's
just run the program, it takes a few moments to identify all of the known
codecs that cause this problem and gives you the opportunity of renaming
them, or, you can now use the new Auto feature in version 1.5 and let the
program take care of virtually everything to do with this problem

You can then run Movie Maker and immediately determine if it actually was a
codec issue. If it was a codec issue Movie Maker will now run properly. If
it was not the issue, you have lost nothing more than a short amount of
time.

Whether or not it was a codec issue you must run the program once more and
restore the problem codecs to their original names.

The two procedures together can take less time than it did to read this
message and a whole lot less than reading mountains of bumph that may or
may not apply to you.
