Yet Another "Can't Save Movie" Plea For Help

Out of nowhere, my MM2 refuses to save any movie file except to DV-AVI. I've been using it exclusively for quite some time and have become totally dependent upon it. Now I am getting the typical message about checking the amount of drive space, source files, etc. I checked them and all was fine. I read on the Microsoft site about increasing the page file and that also was no help. I tried reinstalling it, and again, same error message. I read just about everything on Papajohn's site and again, nothing worked. I would even be happy about going back MM1 to see if that works. I couldn't find on the XP disc the folder that was mentioned. And when I type in the DOS commands, I got an error message about no destination file being found. I went back to the Microsoft site and downloaded codecs and just about everything else I could find. I even changed the TEMP folderto the desktop.

The QASF.DLL is version 9 as it should be. I've got 258 ram, 1.2 gig processor and 7 free gigs on one drive and 8 on another. Outside of formatting my hard drive (which I absolutely can't do), I have no clue what else to do.

The only thing I did since the last time I saved a movie without a problem (Tuesday) was defrag both drives.

Please, if anyone has a suggestion, email me. I recently started a little side business of editing home videos and I've got people waiting for the finished product. Even if you don't have a suggestion regarding a fix to this problem, maybe someone could suggest another similar application that I could donwload and purchase.

So, save it as DV-AVI. Then do this:

it's MUCH better to save the file as avi
from MovieMaker, then (after reading the docs!) encode it via Media Encoder,
which gives you far more control over the encoding..I've seen too many
movies out there with 40kbit/sec for the movie, and >1000kbit/sec for the
audio! If you use encoder correctly, you can get movies double the quality
and half the size that moviemaker will do with it's standard options.

You will have full control over frame-rates, encoding passes, VBR/CBR, audio
compression etc etc etc.
And you can batch up encoding jobs to run overnight. You can edit the
copyright/title info, add scripts....trust me, it's a free download and
you'll NEVER save a wmv from MovieMaker once you've used it!

Your symptoms are highly indicative of an out of date QASF file. How
many copies of QASF.DLL are on your computer. The one in my "Registered
DLL's" is both out of date (version 5) and NOT used. The one that is used is
in the System32 directory and that is Version 9.

Your Pagefile should be 1.5 times the amount of RAM as described on
Microsoft's site.. Any more is a waste of resources.

The Desktop is simply another directory with a visual interface.
Changing Temp to desktop could result in a desktop overpopulated with Icons.

The amount of hard drive space, not allowing for the space taken by any
temporary files, is quite low. 7GB would give you a file of approx. 32
minutes in theory, in practice it could be less than half of that.

I've got 2 of those DLLs. One in System32 and one in Registered Packages. Both are version 9.0. I've been using Movie Maker for close to a year and never had to change and Pagefile settings. Like i said, I did change them now and there was no result. As for the hard drive space, it's been pretty much the same as it's always been. I have to check because I did install a few games on the C a few weeks ago.

I took your advice and downloaded the Encoder program. Still there is a a problem. I took an 18 second clip in MM2 and saved it to DV-AVI. Before encoding it, I played it in Media Player. The video was fine, but the audio stuttered. I still encoded it. Now granted, I didn't play with the settings. I just imported the file and started. It took about 10 minutes to finish. When playng the clip, the audio steam was as it was supposed to be, but the video was way behind.

Here is what I need to do with MM2. I'll record a tv show through my tuner card, save the file and import into MM2. After editing out the commercials, I'll save the file as "high quality video (small). It takes about 40 minutes to save for an hour program. Then I will take the finished file and encode it through TMPGEnc Plus to make it into a vcd.

and games use CODECS to write to the screen and sound device!!! You had
better check out the file KSPROXY.AX. This one is used by many games ....

If you do a search yourself you should have the following

KSPROXY exists in

1) C:\Windows\system32
2) C:\windows\driver cache\i386
3) C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages\{44BBA855-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

they are all Version 5.3.0.900 on my system What I just discovered is that
there file created date is 25 January 2004, 22:45:58. I have no idea why
that is.

That's your basic setting...I have no games on my machine other than those
that come with XP If you have something different, you might have found the
source of your problem. The file is part of the DirectX installation. One
possibility for it not being updated is due to doing partial updates over
the Internet. Solution...download the full version 9.0b and install that.

You might also want to run the DirectX Diagnostics....maybe discover some
thing that way if the above does not solve your problem.

You won't believe this. I got fed up and started looking elsewhere to edit my video. I downloaded and installed Video Edit Magic. Take a guess which other software started working ? MM2 has been back in business all afternoon. Good thing too. I didn't care too much for the application that I downloaded. It would have done the job, but I am so used to MM2.
