MPG file editing and audio sync problem

I am having a problem with WMM 2 keeping sound in sync
with video in a large MPG file.

I am using a Hauppauge PVR-250 video capture card to
capture 24 minutes of video and audio. This equates to a
file about 1.5 GB in size. The file loads in WMM 2
without any issues and plays perfectly. I used WMM 2 to
cut off about 5 seconds from the end of the file (some
video I didn't want) and checked my playback...no
problems. The movie is how I want it and no sync
problems. When I save the movie as a WMV, the audio is
out of sync. It starts in sync but appears to lose a
second every 7-9 minutes. By that, I mean that by 7-9
minutes into the movie, the audio is playing about one
second or so off the scene the video displays the source
of the sound (eg. someone talking)...and this gets
progressively worse. I am not sure if I am skipping some
step in the process of saving or editing the movie but I
am having no luck finding anything indicating what I am
doing wrong.

Has anyone else seen this and, if so, what is the fix?

After reading a few items on this message board, I updated
all my codecs and tried again to convert the movie using
both the Windows Media Encoder and AVS VideoConverter. It
still loses sync on the audio. I tried setting CBR and
VBR on the conversions and nothing seems to help. One odd
items is that WME had horrible video when it converted to
a WMV file.

I tried to do the same thing to some 12.5 minute clips
(500 MB or so) a week ago and all those clips were fine
even after editing with WMM2. Does anyone think this
might be an issue with the size of the file(s) I am
working with?

Hello there Dan,

Bad news on your problem. The synch problem you mention is a well-known problem of the Hauppauge card and basically, of many internal tuner/digitizing cards.

What happen iis that the card and HDD can not keep up with the data flow coming in. as a result you periodically lose frames during aquisition. You do not notice it at first as the file you aquire is in synch (the frame drop being synchronous to the audio track) The problem when you recompile the file is that tue compilation takes the frames and basically puts them one after the other filling in the missing frames with the ones afterwards etc etc etc. in the end you wind up with up to a full minute out of sync on a single hour movie.

I own a Wint TV PVR PCI and a PVR 250. I used them to record my tv shows and series. It worked fine until I decided to start burning DVDs ( I had 6 120Gb HDD full at the time) You can guess the result ! It took me 20 dvds before I found the info on a couple of sites.

Now I use a Dazzle DVC 150 to record my movies. I have scratched most of my recent recordings and I am using two PCs to re-record my older (almost collector) recordings. To save them I ply them full screen on the first PC with the TV and audio outputs plugged into the Dazzle DVC 150 input. I still lose a bit of quality but it's worth it.

Now the PB with the Dazzle is the lack of programming as with the Hauppauge but at least I get to burn my dvd without Problem. I am honestly considering buying a second one to be able to record two programs simultaneously ( I have 4 PCs )

Oh, another piece of advice, to minimize the out-of-synch PB when you digitize whith the hauppauge:
1. use 2 HDD and don't aquire to the system drive
2. defragment the drive before acquisition
3. Always have at least 512 Mb FREE ram
4. a Pc below 2Ghz has no chances.

pls could anyone help for this....
an uknown error appear while saving movie to dvd drive.

the movie is saved to hard disk successfully, but trying to dvd it dowload
till about 80% then message unknow error, any suggestion, help or advice.
