It is possible, but unlikely. Have you updated to DirectX 9.0b using
Windows Update?

baffled. i have turned off virus scan and every other
task and tried. i don't know where to go next.

Was it running fine and this is a new issue, or is this the first attempt to
do video capture with this computer?

Maybe a system restore if it has been working fine in the recent past.

motherboards and .avi files? intel has very little posted
