VPN confusion

I want to set up a VPN with a couple friends. I have XP Home and they both have XP Pro. I'm using a DSL intrnet connection as is one of the other PC's. The other one uses dial-up access. I have my "Incoming Connections" set to allow VPN connections, and my DSL gateway set to allow VPN's. The gateway is an Actiontec something or other, but anyway, it has ethernet and USB cables. I have them both plugged in to my PC and the connections bridged. I don't know if that's really necessary but a friend told me that it might help my internet go faster. Do the connecting PC's need to call the default IP (192.168.0.1) or the IP of the bridge(192.168.0.9)? Any help would be useful. I'm losing hair and sleep over this stupid thing!

The router giving you the 192.168 IPs (private IPs) needs to forward the
request to the proper machine.

Colin, your friend will need to "call" the public IP address of your
network. You can find it here www.whatismyip.com. I would also unplug the
USB hook up from the gateway, I don't think that will help your speed at all
and it just makes things more complex. Then you will want the gateway to
forward VPN traffic (port 1723) to your computer's private IP address
192.168.0.1 (I assume). You will also need to make sure they have user
accounts on your machine (make sure they don't have admin rights) and then
share the folders you want them to have access to.

Oh, you will only be able to have one of them connect at a time.
