I know about the remote desktop bug with the audio tunnel that prevents you from playing audio files on the remote computer (leaving the audio at the remote machine). I have a music server machine located downstairs that I'd like to run from upstairs using RDS. The workaround that used to work for me was to start Windows Media Player manually downstairs, then I could connect remotely and select playlists, etc. At some point this broke. (Don't know why, could have been an update, could have been a setting change but I can't figure out how to make it work again.) Now any time I connect to the remote machine, Media Player stops and I can't play anything because it thinks that there's no audio driver installed. Any idea why the workaround no longer works? Is there some setting that breaks it? Any other options? I know that this was supposed to be fixed in SP2 for XP, but apparently I'll be in the old folks home listening to elevator music before that comes out. The new MS licensing agreement also prohibits you from using VNC or any of the other desktop sharing programs (if you read it carefully). So will there be a patch before SP2?
Thanks, John |

Have you double checked the settings when you start your Remote
Desktop connection? Perhaps (over time), the Audio Redirection settings were changed to something other than "Leave at Remote Computer". FWIW, I believe that the EULA issues over VNC and Netmeeting were discussed here in this newsgroup in the past and everyone came to the conclusion that VNC, PC Anywhere, and Netmeeting comply with the EULA since they are limited to 1 session total and programs like the RD extender program (not named here) would violate the EULA since it extends RD support to multiple sessions... I have double and triple checked the settings to be sure that audio is left at the remote computer. I've played with the other settings as well to no avail. Interesting info about the EULA, thanks. I'll have to go back and re-read the language. One of the mags (PC magazine maybe? I can't remember.) seems to also be under the impression that VNC and PC Anywhere are in violation of the EULA. Maybe they should be informed that they're reading it incorrectly too. (A press release from Redmond maybe?) Regards, John |

That isn't likely, though....
![]() Have you changed your Fast User Switching settings lately? This also directly impacts the audio issues for some... Aha! As a matter of fact, I have changed my fast user
switching settings. If I had to guess, I'd say that was right around the same time that the workaround for remote audio broke. I'll try switching back tonight and post the results in case anyone else is having the same problem. Thanks! I am experiencing the exact same problem. Try the
following 1. Boot up the remote PC 2. Log in and invoke an app that requires the sound driver e.g. Musicmatch Jukebox 3. Then log on remotely and everything will work ok Not very convenient, but until a better solution comes up.... Hope this helps! |
