Default How can I get rid of

Windows Messenger keeps on popping up to ask me to log
in. I DON@T USE WINDOWS MESSENGER. How can I "get rid of
it" so that it stops annoying me?
A FRUSTRATED NON-USER

Greetings Ken,

You can completely remove Windows Messenger (4.7) but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, and Application Sharing from working.

However, if you don't use this functionality that would be disabled by removing Messenger,
you can simply remove it by closing down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger
icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button,
then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

A far simpler way to stop this appalling Microsoft intrusion is by
installing a tiny simple little prog called "Shoot the messenger" (do a
Google search). It's free and puts an icon on your desktop which simply lets
you turn Messenger on or off.
Again Microft attempt to FORCE their customers to use Messenger. Most people
have no interest whatsoever in it.

Doesn't this program actually enable/disable the Messenger Service, rather than Windows Messenger?
Which would render it completely and utterly useless for someone wanting to remove Windows
Messenger.
