Finding contacts

When trying to find contacts using the Hotmail Member
Directory, I get an error message "Operation could not be
completed".

Why is this? Is there something I can do about it?

The Hotmail Member Directory hasn't been active for some time, instead of you wish to search
it, you can do so here:

Why is it still an option for finding a contact? Is there
really no other way, through the Windows Messenger
interface, of finding a contact without knowing their email
address?

Hi Kim,

It's been gone from MSN Messenger for awhile, I think at the last Windows Messenger 4.x
upgrade, it might have still been operating (hence why it's still there).

Unfortunately no, there is no way current to locate someone just inside Windows Messenger on
the public .NET Messenger network currently.
