Default why is there 2 messengers running????

I updated windows messenger a couple of days ago, now when boot up, i
have 2 messengers that start up, the newer version and older version.
I went to the add/remove programs from the control panel, and there is
only one messenger removal option there.
How can i remove the older messenger version??
Any responses would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeeves

Are you sure you didn't upgrade to MSN messenger instead?
On the "add/removove" program list, the windows messenger
isn't suppose to show up but if you have MSN messenger
install, it will show up because windows messenger is
different from MSN messenger.

Greetings Jeeves,

Actually you must've installed MSN Messenger, which runs alongside of Windows Messenger.
You'll just need to disable Messenger. To disable Windows Messenger, open it up (click Start,
then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run
this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending
on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows
Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows
Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will
continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi JenJ,

Yes there certainly is, just close all current open Internet Exploer windows, then download
and run this .reg file:

After this, reopen Internet Explorer.
