What you are missing is that MSN messenger 6 and WINDOWS (and not MSN)
messenger 4.7 are separate programs MM6 is not an upgrade of WM4.7.
There are ways to uninstall WM4.7. You should search for messages/replies of
Jonathan Kay in this NG.

I had similar problem.
I tried to search the rteply from Jonathan Kay, but i think it was for
Windows "Messenger" service, NOT Windows Messenger 4.7
I still had problem to remove WinMessenger 4.7 from my system

Got it!!

Finally I found out that MSN Messenger 6 does not replace Windows Messenger
4.7 (they are separate, different
products). Thanks Jonathan!

You may choose to just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by opening it up,
click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when
Windows starts'

But If you prefer to REMOVE (MSN 4.7 plus Remote Assistance, Whiteboard,
Application Sharing, Exchange Messaing and any other applications that
utilize Messenger), you can turn it OFF permanently by doing this:

Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then press ENTER.
Double-click the following items to expand them:

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates >
Windows Components > Windows Messenger

Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to run, and then click Enabled.
Click OK, and then quit the Group Policy snap-in.

rgds,
Vicha
