I am trying to upgrade windows ME to XP, have done it before no problems
whatsoever. have reformatted harddrives and partitions, ME goes on without a flicker of a problem. have checked all hardware is working properly and that there are no errors, installed/updated all drivers, on most recent BIOS. when installing XP it reaches installing devices, gets to about 37 minutes left and then just stops and nothing else happens. Have tried a different CD, safe mode, disconnecting everything not needed at all, no error messages given, nothing seems to happen. have upgraded previously without a problem, have installed nothing on ME whatsoever apart from graphics card drivers which shouldn't affect an install of windows (did try before doing this anyway and nothing worked!) Also tried clean install of XP and it did exactly the same. any ideas? Please help as this one is driving me insane. Cathy |

Thanks Carey - they were very useful, have done quite a few of those things
already, one question though - how would I disable items in the BIOS? Just to prevent me trying all the other options and reaching this one and not being able to do any of this. Thanks for all your help though. cathy "Carey Frisch [MVP]" wrote: > Windows XP SP1 Installation Stops Responding with About 34 Minutes Remaining > http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;815319 > > Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining > http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;828267 > > -- > Carey Frisch > Microsoft MVP > Windows XP - Shell/User > > Be Smart! Hey Cathy,
When the CPU boots it will display a key to press to enter BIOS, usually the del or F2 key. You may have to consult manual or manufacturer website if it is not apparent. You can disable external cache and/or system/video bios cache there. I tried all the disbaling etc for the bios as well as everything else but for
some strange reason it is still hanging during setup installinging devices. from the error report it looks like it is failing when trying to install initpki.dll. have tried viewing the logs, by using shift+F10 but can only access the setupapi.log as all the others are in use and I am unable to access them. (used the help files given to me by Carey for that) Any ideas more help? This is driving me insane, it is always stopping at exactly the same point. Cathy |

Also are you trying the upgrade from within Windows or booting from the CD. Might try one or the other. Also, if there is Fail Safe Mode and you select it, it may alter your boot sequence... so if you want to boot from CD you might check that. Some machine BIOSs have it. I am having an upgrade issue also. My post follow yours, Win XP Pro upgrade from Win98 Se Good Luck! |

Upgrading Via CD, have tried to CD's and copying the files to desktop to boot from there. It will not boot from CD - have tried that one many a time as well. This is VERY strange as I had NO problems installing XP as an upgrade from ME on this pc last time and NOTHING has changed, all hardware compnents are working perfectly, all drivers up to date. tried disabling things etc and it will not install. The only thing that is different from last time is the partitions, but this shouldn't make any difference as it is only the sizes that are different this time. Is there anyone who has had this problem and actually managed to overcome it? Cathy - being driven insane by XP Install |
