Default XP SP2 Automatic update hangs

Hi.
When trying to update to SP2 using the windows automatic update, the
installation starts does the checking, does the back-up, when doing the
"creating restore points" it hangs and I have to reboot.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Third party applications may interfere with the
installation of hotfixes and service packs.

In order to elimintate as many variables as possible,
download the service pack locally. Once that is complete,
disconnect from the network and turn off any anti-virus,
backup, or any other unecessary services. If possible,
install the SP in safemode. Then run the Service Pack.
This usually eliminates most issues.
