I'm having trouble accessing the internet. My cable modem is fine. When I
use troubleshooting it shows the com port not connected. When I go to Device Manager under ports it only shows the LPT1 port and no com ports. Did my com port die? If so can it be resurrected? How do I do this? When an internet page does load (after many seconds) it will show no server found but when I click refresh the page appears. I'm not real computer literate so please be as specific as possible. THANK YOU! |

Are you sure that you have a cable modem? I've never heard of a cable modem that connects via the legacy serial (COM) ports. However, the old telephone dial-up modems do still use COM ports. Cable modems usually connect to the PC by way of a USB port or an Ethernet connection. Exactly what brand/model cable modem do you have, and how is it physically connected to the PC? -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html You can have peace. It is connected at the back where it says 'network' so i guess that is an
ethernet connection. But when I try to troubleshoot it comes back and says the com port is missing/not found. The modem is a model 60678EU external cable modem. I'm just trying to be able to connect. It seems that it is dropping my IP address. But the cable company can ping to my computer and back. Still, when I try to access an internet page through internet explorer it takes forever and then says page not found but refreshing brings it up. Once I'm on a site I can do OK until I have to go to another page (like hit the continue button). Any ideas? Thanks! Any ideas? > If you're connected via an Ethernet card, you needn't worry about any legacy COM port settings. In fact, troubleshooting an Ethernet connection shouldn't even test any COM ports. What make/model Ethernet card do you have? How, precisely, are you getting to this point? You've still failed to mention the specific brand of cable modem you're using. Is it the Ambit SlipStream 60678EU? If so, have you followed the cable modem's manufacturer's troubleshooting guide(s)? http://usercenter.cox.net/sdckb/mod...bit_60678eu.htm http://www.ambitbroadband.com/broad...Qs-Ethernet.asp Your ISP should be able to walk you through configuring your NIC and Cable Modem to properly communicate with their service. Can you ping your ISP's servers? Have you configured your IP and DNS settings per the instructions provided by the ISP? -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html You can have peace.
