Recently I took delivery of a new PC Intel Pentium 4 540 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.2GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology Asus P5AD2 Premium 925X (LGA775) Motherboard Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 200GB 2000JB ATA- 100 8MB Cache AOpen H600A Super Tower 300W PSU Corsair 512MB DDR2 XMS2-5400 Pro Windows XP Pro (already owned) Everything was going fine until I connected to the net for the first time and got a virus that made the pc keep restarting itself and freezing up the net As a result of this I decided to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch, nothing unusual there yes but as I had never reformatted before I by mistake tried to reinstall Windows via desktop instead of reformatting the hard drive first and that is where the problems began, when I tried to reformat the hard drive like i should have done in the first place my pc kept refusing saying that there were programs already running (the virus I guess) Now when I try and install Windows via boot up it comes up with the following error message every time that I try and install Windows via boot up stop; 0x0000007b (0xf898563c, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) This also happens if I change over hard drives so it can't be a hard drive problem, BIOS update has also been installed so that is running normally So is it a) a faulty XP disc b) a problem with the motheboard c) a system virus I need to know as it simply won't let me install Windows even after reformat or switching drives this is what i get.... A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure its properly configured and terminated, Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: ***STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF898563C, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) |

Disconnect the machine from the Internet. 2. Instruct the BIOS to boot from the CD. 3. Boot with your WinXP CD. 4. When you get the opportunity, allow the process to format your hard disk. 5. Install WinXP. 6. Install a virus scanner. 7. Activate your firewall. 8. Connect to the Internet. |

More about it here:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;324103 Some claim that Asus Update is not always the correct choice - try to flash BIOS via floppy or reset from the jumper. Also, there should be a "Boot virus protection" option in Asus BIOS - search Google for "asus anti-boot virus protection or so". If the XP clean reinstall fails - as it happens at times - use a HDD utility to write 0s (zeros) on the drive; check WD web site for disk utilities. Sure, it's a brute procedure, but it might save you a lot of time and work - i.e. failed instalations. Writing 0's full takes a few *good* hours on a 200 GB HDD . Then, just install XP as on a new, clean drive - you'll need the'qualifying OS." Of course, install an Anti-virus and a firewall before connecting to any network. Here's an update... someone emailed me the following:
********************** NO NO NO !!!!!!!! Do not write zeros with Western digital software, my HDD broke(physically). Create a dos disk, then use fdisk, then use format, install windows, and check to see if everything is ok, then if you want to convert to NTFS. I had a 250GB WD SATA hdd, now I have a new one because of the WD software, I have warned you. **************** "Michael" <afn18721@afn.org> wrote in message news:OtdphrWqEHA.644@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... > More about it here: > http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;324103 > Some claim that Asus Update is not always the correct choice - try to > flash BIOS via floppy or reset from the jumper.
