Default config\system error

Hi i got the following error when booting my laptop.
Windows XP could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

It does not even let me login to SAFE mode. I have
updated to SP2 a couple of days back.

From the articles i tried to repair the installation
using the XP SP1 CD from Compaq. it detects all my
hardware and then fails with the following error -
"There is syntax error with the .SIF file that setup
uses."

I just cannot get beyond this. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have tried logging with the option to restore to last
known good configuration. That did not work either.
When i try to repair windows using the setup CD, it
recognizes the hardware and before showing the setup
screen where i can select R to repair, it crashes with
the error syntax error in .SIF file.
