Memory Leak or memory paging problem with new Dell and XP Home SP2.

I just got a new Dell with XP Home SP1a installed which I
updated to SP2. This computer has 1 GB of 533 MHz memory
and a 3 GHz processor and a 250 GB Maxtor SATA drive.

It kept crashing with warnings that there is not enough
memory and warnings that the memory allocation for paged
memory was too low. This occurred in spite of allocating
a minimum of 2.5 GB and a maximum of 4.096 GB of memory
to paged memory.

I decided to try a system restore but, when I tried with
the Dell provided XP Home SP1a disk, a dialog box popped
up with: Setup cannot continue because the version of
windows on your computer is newer than the version on the
CD.

Apparently, I am now faced with a total reinstall of XP
Home with SP1a which will wipe out all of the software,
etc. which took me many hours to install. Is there a way
around this problem?

As well, if I wanted to upgrade to XP Pro, I will
probably be faced with the same problem. Instead of an
upgrade, I will be faced with a total reinstall because
the XP Pro installation CD will have SP1a on it, not SP2
(retailers probably don't have any XP Pro packages with
SP2 on the CD). Is there a way around this problem? The
answer to the previous problem will probably answer this
one too, I hope.

A new Dell computer should not have the problems you
are experiencing. You probably have a hardware issue.
