Default Upgrade from SP1 to SP2: ntdll.dll error

I'm struggling to upgrade our Dutch Language Windows XP Home
Edition PC to SP2.
The PC has SP1 installed and all updates to date.
Downloaded the Dutch language SP2 network installation file.
Installation goes well, after the reboot the system can't start:

Blue screen with:
STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

Can start in Safe mode and luckily return to the old situation
with Systemrecovery.

I checked Microsoft artikel:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...4&Product=winxp
The suggestions do not apply to me it seems.

The PC:
Intel D815EEA2 motherboard
Onboard Video and Audio
1,13GHz Pentium III CPU
512MB RAM
RealTek ethernet adapter
Plextor CD writer

No very special software installed (some games for the kids, and
MS Office XP).

The PC has McAfee VirusScan Enerprise Edition 7.1 (disabled
during SP2 installation), up-to-date, systems seems to be clean.
Used Ad-Aware SE, no items found.
Free diskspace 20GB, defragmented.
Did run the Microsoft Memory test found here
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp: ok
Checked the Internet for most recent hardware drivers, all ok as
far as I can see.
Did run sigverif, all drivers ok
Did another SP2 installation sequense on the same machine with
the USB printer and USB scanner disconnected (a suggestion found
somewhere): no effect.

The only issues seen:
Recoveryconsole: chkdsk /r
I have run chkdsk /r two times, different days, both times
errors where found during the initial run, next runs show no
more errors.

Is anything more I can check or correct, any more logfiles to
find?

Proceed with a "repair install", then install SP2.
