Default Installed Programs Cannot Access Internet to Update

Hello,

I do not understand my problem so help will be much
appreciated.

I'm running XP Pro SP1. I first noticed that several
programs that needed to online register were telling me
the servers were unavailable. One of them I was online
with using IE6 at the time, so I know that was incorrect.
There are several different programs that were working
quite well but that cannot not access internet sites to
check for updates. All return some error message, usually
a very similar message, amounting to the servers not
being available.

I tried to reinstall XP hoping to repair any damaged
system files hidden away somewhere. Everything looked to
be going fine until the final reboot when the system
could not locate the boot disk. The message said
something like it could not locate windows install to
setup from.

I now have something that looks like a dual-boot setup.
When I start up I have to choose run xp or the setup xp.
If I don't it goes the Setup XP and cannot go any further
each time. So, how do I get rid of the dual-boot choice?
And, how do I find the problem stopping my programs
running under XP from reaching the internet. There is no
firewall anywhere.

Thanks.

You can get rid of the dual boot this way:
Click start/control panel/system/advanced/startup and
recovery/edit
Here you can remove the unwanted starup choice.
