Default Help! XP Install Problem

Help! I am trying to format and fresh install XP Home on
an older system that has a P2-300Mghz and 128MB RAM
(minimum requirements according to MS). Everything goes
fine until the final boot. When it gets to the "Welcome"
screen, the system freezes. I CAN get into Safemode and
the Device Manager and it appears that XP has recognized
all of my hardware correctly. I am thinking it might be a
driver or not enough RAM, but not sure what to do next.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

Default RE: Help! XP Install Problem

hi,
maybe this will help

SEE XP Help "fixing problem"->startup/shutdown

-> open DEVICE MGR
If you are not sure which hardware device is causing the problem, turn off
all nonessential devices, and then turn them back on one at a time
Modems
Network adapters
Ports (COM & LPT)
Sound, video and game controllers
Universal Serial Bus controllers ->(n/a if keyboard or mouse uses USB )
If Disable is not available, this usually means that the device is critical
and should not be disabled.
Do not use Uninstall instead. Uninstalling a device only means that it will
be redetected and installed the next time you restart your computer

If you can restart your computer normally after you turn off nonessential
devices,
Turn the devices back on one at a time, until your computer fails to start
correctly.

Joel(future MVP): Thanks. I did what you suggested.
Turned off everything I did not think I needed and it
worked! I did not isolate which exact item was causing
the freeze, but think it might be the soundcard. At least
now I can rule out RAM and essential system hardware. Is
it OK if I have further tech questions, to contact you
directly through the email listed?
Thanks again,
