Win XP Programs Lock up

Whenever I have more than one program open the computer
locks and leaves a fade image of the program I was trying
to open on the screen. Also, can not shutdown. When I
click on the shutdown button or log out the computer
freezes.

Could perhaps be a video driver problem, but more likely it is
something more fundamental.

First thing I would try is a repair installation. For this you
need a full, not OEM, Windows installation CD.

Boot from the CD, first select to install Windows, not repair.

The installer should then show you your current installation and
offer to do a repair installation on it. Do this.

Of course there is always some risk, so take the usual
precautions. Back up everything of value, etc.
