Default XP SP2 Crashes on reboot

I've installed SP2 for XP following automatic update. Ran
through with no error messages. Preformed a reboot.
Machine froze on the shutdown, so manual turned off
computer. Now, when attempting to turn on the computer,
the load up screen freezes at the begining (Window XP
screen displayed - progress bar halts half way through
first scan across). Attempted to load through safe mode.
Loads a series of sys files then hangs. I now can't get
on to the computer at all. Have phoned tiny.com support
at premium rate number but useless on help. No restore
disk supplied with computer - want be to pay £60 for a
copy. I've had the machine 10 days. System: Processor -
Intel Celeron D Processor 320;
Operating System - Microsoft® Windows XP Home; Memory -
512MB DDR RAM (2x 256MB); Motherboard - Microstar® MS6787
Micro ATX Motherboard.

Any help would be appreciated.

I solved a similar problem with two new computers (based on gigabyte
GA-8IG1000MK - Intel 865G chipset) by updating computer's BIOS.

John,

Go to Microstar's website and see if they have BIOS upgrade for your
Microstar® MS6787
Micro ATX Motherboard.

If so, follow their directions to the letter on how to DL and upgrade your
BIOS.

If this fails and the machine is only 10 days old, how about returning it as
"defective" for replacement or a refund? Is that a possibility?

Thanks

Microstar website has no listing of motherboard - says
that it could be a bundled product from Time. But, there
support site doesn't list either. Will contact through
Time email support.

When i talked to Time on premium rate number they
basically said it was my fault - that the computer had
been working fine and that I installed bad software on
it. Don't think they'll take it back now. But, managed
to get a Restore disk from them for nothing (awaiting the
mail).

Celeron D's are just like the Prescott in their behavior.

Sounds like AMD either got lucky or did some sabotage...

Default RE: XP SP2 Crashes on reboot

I had the same problem and hastily formatted my hard drive and installed SP2
after reinstallg XP Pro. Could have saved myself a lot of grief had I known
the problem was my A4Tech mouse (see email reply from A4Tech below) Resorted
to an old PS2 mouse and no problems. If I plugged the USB mouse in it would
go back to the endless rebooting cycle.
Hope this at least helps somebody?

Dear Sir /Madam ,

Sorry, all our A4 mouse drivers ,including your mouse and its driver
currently, our mouse and its driver are completely incompatible with WinXP
SP2, We are negotiating with Microsoft company to sign the relative protocol
to support WinXP SP2. So it will take two months about to thoroughly
upgrade our mouse driver to support SP2. You'll be informed as soon as the
updated driver is released.meanwhile, please wait patiently for the upgraded
driver for a about month.

Best regards,
