Installation of downloads fails w/o error message

I've upgraded to XP from ME and has smooth sailing for a
few moinths, however now when I download service packs or
virus definition updates and run the installer from my
desktop, the installer eventually fails without installing
anything. PC is working fine, however I'm vulnerable as I
dont have the latest service pack or virus defs. Help!
