I have currently installed Windows XP Proffessional on a
computer that I plan to give to charity. I would like to know if there is a process in deactivating Windows XP on an older computer and reinstalling/activating on a new computer. I will not be keeping any of the older computers hardware. Thanks in advance for your help. Vriesea |

Hi
XP will have to be deleted from the PC before it can be installed onto another one. That means the PC you are going to give away will not have an OS installed on it, unless you have a CD from a previous version of Windows to install. -- Will Denny MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User Please reply to the News Groups "Vriesea" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1c87e01c452fb$821b9090$a301280a@phx.gbl... | I have currently installed Windows XP Proffessional on a | computer that I plan to give to charity. Hello
There is no deactivation required, you can not install XP or any MS OS on more then 1 computer without acquiring another license, you can install & uninstall a retail version of Windows XP on any computer you wish as long as it is not installed on multiple computers with just 1 license (key code). Windows OEM version software (factory installed) are tied to the original computer and are not transferable. -- Hope This Helps Haus Not a MVP Not a MS-MVP Not nothing just a good ole boy.. ![]() "Vriesea" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1c87e01c452fb$821b9090$a301280a@phx.gbl... > I have currently installed Windows XP Proffessional on a > computer that I plan to give to charity. Greetings --
There is no "de-activation" process or any other required procedure, as such. Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call. Here are the facts pertaining to activation: Piracy Basics - Microsoft Product Activation http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/ Windows Product Activation (WPA) http://www.aumha.org/a/wpa.htm Bruce Chambers -- Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html You can have peace.
