Uninstalling XP

I am having a problem trying to help out on my son's
Compaq computer which was purchased with Windows 98
installed. He got halfway into the setup of Windows XP
and a fatal error came on and said: Installation Failed:
D:\1386\asms: Error Message: The Parameter is
incorrect. Fatal Error: one the the components that
windows needs to continue setup is missing. Also, a
message appeared stating the Windows would not start
because the followig file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System 32\Config\System

He wants to get back to the original 98 second edition
operating system or continue the XP installation, but is
stuck half way through the XP installation. Can anyone
help us?
