My hard drive is defective, but still working, and I want
to replace it without losing any data or settings. I can't seem to find a help article which will explain this. I know how to install XP on the new drive, but the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" seems designed only for transfer to a different computer. Is there any way to use this on the same computer? |

The file transfer wizard gets determined to do that but,set computer
as old, transfer data to a new folder you create in the wizard or make one up before, desktop is good place for it,then transfer data to new folder, when its thru, transfer data to a cd or dvd. Then on new hd,youre settings, files are ready to set-up,reopen wizard, browse to data in new folder on cd. |

It sounds like you are saying that I can use a CD as an
intermediate storage device with the wizard. I will give this a try - thanks for your advice. >-----Original Message----- > The file transfer wizard gets determined to do that but,set computer > as old, transfer data to a new folder you create in the wizard or make one up > before, desktop is good place for it,then transfer data to new folder, when its > thru, transfer data to a cd or dvd. Then on new hd,youre settings, files are ready > to set-up,reopen wizard, browse to data in new folder on cd. >. > |

Some disk manufacturers provide you with their own disk copy software - check their web page. You ***cannot*** transfer your disk data while WinXP is active - lots of locked (but essential) files won't be copied, and the new disk won't boot. |

I'm afraid your suggestion will never let the OP copy his old disk to a new disk. |

Gary, you already got good advice. If you want to read about more details, please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxMove.htm. Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. |
