xp crash after sp 1a

My buddy's computer crshed after installing service pack
1a. When finished he rebooted and it went into checkdisk
and he said it was saying it was deleting stuff, when done
it would not go into xp it would go blue screen even if he
goes into safe mode or last known good.

Just FYI; chkdsk cannot delete anything....if files were being deleted,
then it was something else, not chkdsk. He did no get the link to the
service pack in an email, did he?
