Default icons in system tray usually failed to show up

I'm a XP home edition user and it is on a dell laptop. The problem with the notification area (or system tray, the region displaying time and many small icons) has been annoying me ever since the purchase. After startup of computer, some of the icons are often missed which should normally show up in that area, like VOLUME, or HARDWARE SAVE REMOVAL. Strangely, sometimes they do appear. But more often they do not. This is really undesirable because when I plug my USB memory onto the computer, the SAVE REMOVAL icon usually does not appear. This forces me to remove without safely disactivating the memory. How can I possibly get this around?

I had this exact same problem. I opened up a trouble
ticket with Microsoft and they were absolutely clueless as
to how to fix it. They only way I got it fixed was to do
a complete software reload from scratch.

really? that's awful. I think I'll put up with it though.... complete system reload seems too daunting to me.
