Default Setup Continuously Restarts

Help,

My mates PC had a virus that corrupted the registry. I
therefore tried to reinstall Xp in order to repair the
registry after cleaning the machine. Setup stopped with
34 minutes left and now the machine continuously reboots
and tries to continue setup.
Is there anyway I can remove setup files and start a full
install again, I don't want to format his PC as he has a
lot of data on there.

Any help would be worth a beer!!

Mark

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before repairing XP.

The first thing I would try is to see if you can do a repair on the
existing installation. Boot from the XP CD and follow the prompts to
do a clean install. If you're lucky, you'll get to a screen where the
setup program finds the existing installation and gives you the choice
of reinstalling XP or repairing the existing install. (Note that this
is *not* the same as the repair console which you do not want to use.)
If you do get to the point where you have the option of pressing "R"
to do a repair then hold your breath. press "R" and cross your
fingers. If you don't get the option to repair an existing install
then you'll have to find some other way to try to save the data.
