Default WinXP Home Setup Error Insanity 0x0000007E

Hello!

Today I came home and booted up my laptop and Windows XP Home Edition
wouldn't start. Right after the windows logo came up I got a blue
screen with a stop error on it. No specific files or drivers were
given, just that there was a problem and windows couldn't continue.
The number it gave was 0X0000007E.

So, I rebooted and it just kept going back to that. Eventually I put
in my Windows XP installation CD in. It gets started but then as it's
about to get to work the same error screen comes up.

I tried that for a while but the error kept happening. I tried
rebooting without the installation disk... And then I got the simple
message, "can't find any operating system" or something along those
lines. Then nothing.

So if I use the CD, the error message comes up. If I don't, there's no
operating system. Any ideas?

Soooo, does anyone know WTF I should do at this point? To my
knowledge, I did everything as I should so far. Any clues?

Thanks a million!
