How much can your hardware handle?

XP should be able to utilize 2GB or more of RAM. It's a waste for most
people to have that much memory - as 512MB to 1GB will do under almost all
circumstances. (IMHO)

I believe Windows XP can handle 4gb of RAM. It's always
dangerous to make "you'll never need that much memory"
statements. I remember when I said "you'll never need
8mb of memory".

Windows XP (both Home and Pro) is designed to use up to 4 gb of RAM.

However there is a configuration setting that will need to be made if
you go beyond 3 gb.

Good luck
