Difference between System32, System and Common Files\System folders

Could somenone explain the difference between (according to the Logo
program):
- c:\windows\system (only 16 bit?)
- c:\windows\system32 (only 32 bit?)
- c:\program files\common files\system (16 and 32 bit dll's?)
