Windows XP Explorer "Details View " Columns

How do I control these? They seem to haphazardly refer to
a whole myriad of different file formats and protocols.
For example "Duration" works on some types of multimedia
files, but not others.

Is there documentation anywhere in MSDN explaining the
raison-d'etre for these selectable column names, and what
they analyse to get their information to print on the
screen?
