Default Windows shell hangs while displaying real-time video from DVcam

I have been having problems with video capture stopping/hanging in WMM 2.0.
To isolate the problem, I ran G-Spot and fixed some broken codecs. WMM still
has problems, so I tried viewing video from the DVcam directly from the
Windows Shell. The video preview window locks up anywhere from 50sec to 5min
into the video stream.

Camera: Canon ZR70MC
PC: Dell Latitude D600
Capture Card: CompUSA Combo Firewire/USB 2.0 CardBus card (using the
FireWire port)
OS: Windows XP SP 1 and all hotfixes; DirectX 9.0c. Cannot install SP2 until
IT department distributes it (~90 days till all applications are checked or
upgraded)
Codecs: No DivX installed.
No errors in eventlog.
