Windows Freezing when attempting to play videos

I have Windows XP Home Edition, also WinDvd and the latest
Real Player. When I either try to play a DVD or a mpg that
I downloaded, what ever program I use to play it, opens
up, shows the first frame, then freezes the PC. I cannot
alt-tab out and need to hit the reset.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
