Blank Screen when playing videos

Whenever I play ANY video on my laptop (.avi etc etc) all
of a sudden I just get a black screen, nothing. I can
hear the sound but nothing is displayed. ive tried
everything, reinstalling Media Player 9, reinstalling
latest codecs, gettings bang up to date graphics card
driver, still nothing!!

Can anyone help????
