avi file damaged

I am having trouble opening an avi file in Media Player.
I figured out that the avi file was not closed properly
when it was captured and may be damaged. I have tried
various shareware to repair the file with no success (they
do not even recognize it as an avi). Can someone help me
find a way to repair this file? Thanks,
