No sound, and Direct Play Error

Somehow, I am no longer able to get any sound. I have
checked my hardware to note any problem (question marks,
etc.) and that was fine.
I went to Sounds part on the control panel and hit test
hardware. I come up with the following error:
"An error occured during Direct Play Voice Setup. The
error code is 0x80004001."
I have looked up the problem under the Microsoft
Knowledge Base, and came up with article 282882. I
followed there resolution steps, but still have no
sound. What next?
Do I need to re-install DPVSetup.exe? From where? (It
does not show up un the add/remove programs window).
Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
