Default RE: XP Home delay at startup - solved !

Hi all,

Several months ago, I posted two messages (see below) in these
groups about a delay that I had with XP Home at startup.

It took about a 1 minute delay before I could do several actions,
such as connect to my ISP, browse my HD with explorer, etc.

Well, I finally found the answer, and I'm posting it here in
hope it will help other users with a similar problem.

The delay came from my LAN setup. I have a 10/100 ethernet card
with (only) a DSL modem attached to it.

The solution to the problem is to assign a "dummy" IP address
(and subnet mask) to the network card. By default, it is set to
"obtain an IP address automatically", so I think XP "scans the
LAN" at startup for a (non-existing) server to get the address
from, hence the delay.

To do so:

- Ctrl-Panel -> Network Connections
- Local Area Connection -> properties
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> properties
- select "Use the following IP address", and enter dummy info, such as:

IP address: 1.2.3.4
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

(The IP address is changed once I establish a PPPoe connection to
my ISP.)

Et voila! Problem solved!

Hope this is useful to others!

Hello,

I've been using my XP Home (OEM) for over a week now.
(Still with a VERY clean installation... )

I noticed that if I click my icon to connect to my ISP
(through DSL ethernet modem) at startup, right after
the hourglass next to the pointer disappear (and all
icons are present in "system tray"), it takes over an
extra minute for the "connecting to..." dialog to
appear.

A minute is a long time on a high-end system...

I'm curious to know what's happening during that time?

Does XP keep loading "extra modules" after the desktop
is initially displayed?

Note that if I disconnect and reconnect later, it then
happens very quickly.

One additionnal info I noticed about my problem:

during the one minute delay I mentionned, other actions
are also delayed.

For example, if I browse "my computer" from windows
explorer (instead of initiating DSL connection)
right after startup, I see the "seaching flashlight"
icon for about the same 1 minute delay, before the
result appears (if I repeat afterwards, it's quick).

In that case, I also noticed the "Lan" and "Line TX"
flashing on my DSL modem (and I'm not initiating
DSL connection).

Is it possible that at startup, XP tries to logon to
a non-existing network? (I only have the DSL modem
connected to LAN card, no other networked PCs).

Good post, but where were you two weeks ago when I still had hair!! ;-}

I had ( still have ) a boot, or more accurately, a startup problem. It was
taking almost 5 MINUTES from start to usable system! I managed to shave
over a minute off it by doind something similar but am stll chasing the
other three minutes :-[ of excess time!

I'll try to keep this thread referenced so I cna respond to it IFF I manage
to "fix" it without a reinstall, which is looking more tantalizing each day.
Ev erything works, but that startup is unacceptable - it means something is
goign on that shouldn't be. Might be residue from a worm that made it thru
(I'm a foster parent and take teens - now working on a special game machine
just for them).

Cheers!
