The port will be whichever you connect the printer to.....ie either a USB
port or an LPT (parallel) port.......

Did you connect the printer to the PC BEFORE you installed the software...
Canon printers are particularly fussy about having the printer connected
ONLY when the software tells you to do so....

I would suggest a completely uninstall and reinstall of the printer using
the following instructions

but since you provide such little information, it's impossible for me to
answer the question in any more detail..... for example...

Has the printer ever worked on the PC with XP?
Was this a clean install of XP or an upgrade?
How is the printer connected to the PC?
If it's a USB connection, do other USB devices work correctly on the PC?
