Default HP LaserJet 3100 and WinXP install problems

Hi all,

I have been unable to setup an HP LaserJet 3100 printer/all-in-one to
print under WinXP c/w SP1.

I am on my 2nd drivers disk from HP, telephone support determined that
my first CD must have been bad, as they could not resolve my problem
they mailed me out a new CD.

I have installed/Uninstalled, tweaked and twittered with this for two
days. I've googled and tried whatever seemed applicable and still
nada.

The install procedure works fine, printer is visible in the List of
Printers but it won't print. I've had various error messages including
"Printer is not connected", needless to say, it is. I've switched out
cables, the printer port ( trying both the on-board and an installed
card from another computer, both of which work perfectly with another
printer on the system in question).

On a Win2000 system, that had the printer in question installed on it,
a proprietry HPLJ3100 port was created and assigned to the printer and
a ghost comm7 port was also created. I have read that this is the
usual configuration of the printer.

On my WinXP system, 4 HPLJ3100 ports are created, the last two being
unassignable, and no fake comm7 port is created. I have tried all
combinations that I can think of in terms of configuring these
ports...even assigning the printer to one of the LPT ports..nothing.

The printer installs, the jetSuite software also, fax was working (not
now though) but NO PRINTING.

Any assistence would be GREATLY appreciated.

I've bought a new CD of drivers, paid my fee to HP tech support, spent
two days of my own time...all for nought. Next printer WILL NOT BE HP
!!!
