My problem,
Brand new Dell 5100 laptop being configured for a client. All sets up okay except the HP882C printer. The printer worked fine on previous laptop through LPT1. New laptop has no parallel port, only USB. Connect through USB and WinXP Home sees printer and installs drivers. But when I do a test print, the printer is activated and prints a few lines and suddenly a notice comes up that the print job failed, Message says "cannot start (code 10). Have tried to print through Wordpad, Outlook, and Word with same results. Strange thing is sometimes no printing at all, other times a few lines. Have tried to print over a dozen times with no luck......one time the test page made it 3/4 of the way through then the same error message. Through-out this time I uninstall and then re-install the printer......install goes great, no problems. Went to hardware manger after first failed print job and looked at USB support...sure enough USB printing support was not working.....message said could not start. So in addition to uninstalling the printer, I would stagger uninstalling USB support with the printer....sometimes I would do both. After rebooting (again, this scenario was repeated over a dozen times) sometimes the USB printing support shows up as okay in the Hardware Manager and sometimes not. However, no matter if USB support was showing as okay or not, the same error message would appear. For the times when USB support initially showed to be working, and ultimately the print job failed, Hardware Manager, after the failure, showed the USB printing support not working. Printer port is USB001 Then connected the laptop to an HP Photosmart 1100 through the USB connection, loaded the drivers and printer was found and prints flawlessly in all scenarios. However, when setting up the printer, USB001 port was not used........because the 1100 is newer than the 882C it uses the DOT ports and sets up a number of these. The HP 1100 is my personal printer so the port set up is normal. When the HP 882C is set up, it prints to the USB port and USB printer support (working or not) is listed in the Hardware Manager. However, when the HP1100 is set up and prints to the DOT port, there is NO USB printer support listed in the Hardware Manager.......and it prints flawlessly. Will anybody kindly shed some light as to what is going on or how I can troubleshoot this problem........I've tried HP and Dell's web sights to no avail. Have been following this NG hoping to find a similar problem.....no luck. I'm beginning to think there is a problem with the USB connection on the printer. I used the same cable on the HP so that is not the issue. I have NOT tried using the USB connection on another computer with the HP882C.....hope to do so soon. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
