Default Can not get external Western Digital Hard Drive To Work

I have tried everything up to re-installing Windows XP.
I have the latest patch 1a. My computer has windows XP
Professional installed.

The hard-drive is an external Western Digital 120GB USB
2.0 speed. When I plug it in the USB port I get an error
message that the drive is error code 10. I remove the
drive from the USB which comes up with the name Mass
Storage Device ?. the question mark next to the name Mass
storage device. I have removed five times and try to hope
the plug and play of XP would recognize the drive.
Everytime I have to remove it from the device driver list
under USB devices.

HELP... HELP... help.... What's up with the plug & Play?
I feel the driver is not present to run this device
properly. Where do I get the fix for this problem? I
called Western Digital and they stated that it is not
there problem and they do not have the drivers that I can
download so I would be able to have this device
recognized. They pointed their fingers towards you. SO
AGAIN I SAY HELP.

I will be awaiting your answers and assistance on this
urgent plea. again my e-mail is
